For Rosh Hoshana this year we went to our favorite place to do nothing - The Sea Ranch, California. Tucked on the coast, an hour north of Jenner and just south of the Medocino/Sonoma county line, Sea Ranch is a different reality. One's day is all about napping, building a fire, reading, and maybe even going into town to Vail's Hardware for some homemade fudge.
The one other decent thing to do at Sea Ranch is to go for walks. There are sea lions aplenty, and deer if you're lucky. Bring your binoculars and a decent field guide book or two to identify critters. |

Blackbird Hunting. | Cormorant Hunting. |
Driving back down the coast, one can take the classic Highway One route, or one can choose to take Meyer's Grade.
While perhaps less well-known, Meyer's Grade is not only faster than taking 1 South, but the last 10 minutes of the ride provide an 18% downhill grade, with unparalleled views of the coast and the country below. This drive is not for those who get vertigous, and it is absolutely spectacular. None of these images are terribly tilted, remember - the car is at an 18% grade a good deal. |

At the top of that last decent. | Heading down. Low gear, please. |

Respite to get your bearings. | This is only 18%? |

Past Meyer's Grade, we're headed into the final descent. |
Not nearly as steep, because it's all switchbacks. |

This is "Dramamine Curve". Can you see how the road curves back on itself? |
Finally. Sea level. Jenner, where the Russian River meets the Pacific ocean. |
